Lap-Chi Tsui (pronounced "choy") grew up in a little village on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. As a boy he wanted to be an architect, but he ended up studying biology in university, first in Hong Kong, then at the University of Pittsburgh where he got his Ph.D. in 1979. Tsui came to Canada in 1981. In 1989 he discovered the gene that causes the genetic disease called Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that kills one in 2000 Canadians, mostly children.
